Episode 68

“Why didn’t you tell me that your parents want you to divorce me?” He asks me. He is so sad. This is exactly why I never wanted him to hear wind of this and this is exactly why I kept my parents away from me, my husband and my child. Now they’ve showed up here unannounced and caused drama.
“Because I don’t want to divorce you. Because I love you and I had cut them off for even making that stupid suggestion.” I say.
It doesn’t help. He is beyond sad.
“Lulu –
“Khotso, they have no right to do this. They don’t. You are my family. You are my husband. You are my child’s father. I’m not going to divorce you. Especially for them.” I say.
He is still looking sad.
“Do they know?” He asks me.
“Know what?” I ask.
“That we were in a bad place before we got married? That I cheated and –
“No, I didn’t tell them.”
“Why didn’t you tell them?”
I look at him. Then I say, “Because I love you. And the love I have for you was always going to drive me to forgive you. They would never forgive you.”
He nods his head.
I walk up to him. He is sitting on the couch in the TV area. Rena is in his arms – standard procedure.
I sit next to them. I bring his face towards me and I start kissing him. He lets me.
“I love you. I really do. We can run away together and leave the people with drama behind. We don’t have to take this.” I say and he laughs.

“Knock knock”, Mofomahadi says, announcing herself as she is now inside our TV room. We left her with my parents in the main house and they’ve all been turning shit up together.
“Are they gone?” I enquire. I hope she says yes.
“No, they are still here. They are adamant that they are not leaving here without you.”
I start getting annoyed now. Both Khotso and Mofomahadi can see it.
“Maybe you just need to talk to them, baby girl.” Mofomahadi says.
“I don’t, mme. This is my family that they are coming for like this. My husband. The father of my child. How dare they!” I’m actually upset now.
“How dare we? How dare we what, Oluremi?!” Now my mom is in here too.
“Mom, you need to stop this.”
“Stop what?!”
“This thing that you are doing of trying to separate my family.”
“A family of thugs? Who kill people? Who have absolutely no morals. Your mother-in-law sleeps with brothers, let’s the one brother kill the other and allows the murderer to raise the deceased’s children? All of this opulence and wealth and status has been obtained at the mercy of people’s blood and lives and tears. You are sitting here with a small baby benefiting from it. Have I failed that dismally with you?”
“Where do you get off? Huh? Where do you get off?” Now I’m taking threatening steps towards her.
Khotso is also on his feet now, but more to control my temper. He says that my temper is the worst part about me. He hands Rena to Mofomahadi.
“I believe Regodise. And I want you out of this house and away from these people. I told you – from the moment that you first brought this boy into my house – I told you that his spirit is heavy. Now I know why. He and his family –
“What did Regodise say about Khotso on that thing? Word for word and specifically about Khotso… what did she say?”
“She spoke about them as a collective.”
I nod my head.
“Then wouldn’t you say I’m also part of that collective? How do you know that I haven’t killed people because I’ve been in his life for some time now and we’ve been married?”
My mom looks at me.
“Khotso is my husband. He is my daughter’s father. He is my family. When we got married, we were told that two had become one flesh therefore if you have a problem with Khotso, you have a problem with me and I don’t need you and your problems with us next to my child.”
“This boy is going to hurt you, Oluremi.”
“And I’m going to hurt him. It’s how life is. No one is perfect. We are all doing our best. And sometimes, we hurt the people that we love while trying to do our best. But Khotso and I will figure it out. We always have.”
“This is how Regodise reached her limit. She probably talked back at her parents too – in front of Ona and for Ona – then he learned that she is a stupid little girl who would choose a man over her family. So, he started doing things to her that her family wouldn’t be able to protect her from because just like you, she sent her family packing when they tried to help. Now look how that ended.”
We are all silent.
“We don’t give these men that kind of power, Oluremi. So, I’ll leave you here. But I want you to know and I’m saying this in front of Kea and Khotso: I have not deserted you. When this boy starts treating you like anything that is not what you are worth, you come home. We will never send you away. We love you. And we will never stop protecting you from them. Do you hear me?”
My mom is actually making me emotional.
“I know we are upset with each other, but can I at least meet my grandbaby… my first one.” She says.
Mofomahadi is the one who hands Rena to her.
My mom gets so emotional just looking at her. Then she opens the baby blanket and starts praying for Rena. I really wish things were different and that she didn’t hate my husband so much.
My dad is in here with Morena as well and he too is now praying for my daughter.
Khotso and I look at each other. He is so sad. I hold his hand. He squeezes my hands. He pulls me into a hug, lying my head against his chest. I just wrap myself around him and hold him tight.

….

We were finally able to come back to Tholoana Kingdom and actually live in the royal house. It feels weird being here. Even Khotso and Ona struggled to sleep the first night they were here. But we are all adjusting. We really are. Mohale and Tholoana have moved in with Khotso and me. For now, they share a room so there are two single beds in there, but their room is themed. The other vacant room upstairs is Rena’s nursery. Then the vacant room downstairs is just the guest bedroom.

Khotso has already left the bed. I hear his voice and small voices, so I know that he is with Mohale and Tholoana and they have collectively woken up Rena. Now Rena is showing them flames because she has a routine. They wake her up too early, they miss her routine by a beat and she’s just not having it. I tell them all the time to just let the girl sleep, but they don’t listen. Rena is theirs and theirs alone.

I get into the TV room and I take Rena from them. I don’t say anything, but they know they are in trouble.
“Mommy, dad said that she wouldn’t cry at all today.” Mohale says.
“I wanted to say hello before I leave.” Tholoana.
“Leave?” Me.
He nods his head and says, “Papa wants us to go and play with Khanya and and and and Khosini and and and mama and and and Thabi.” Tholoana says.
“Play? Really? Where?” I ask.
He shrugs his shoulders and says, “I don’t know.”
Khotso and I look at each other.
I heard that Thandeka was discharged from hospital two days ago after being in the hospital for a week. I also heard that yesterday, Ona took Tholoana and went to spend time with Thandeka, Thabi and the two boys. This situation is just awkward. Morena doesn’t want Thandeka sons here – the Buthelezi ones. Ona takes Tholoana to form a relationship with the unwanted brothers and doesn’t seem to notice that Mohale is beginning to feel that there is a difference between him and Tholoana. It pisses me off, but I cannot say anything. There are two moms before me now – Thabi and Thandeka.
“We are going to The Playground with Khabane and Ruri and Mnqobi and Banathi.” Mohale says.
This is going to get ugly.
“The playground? With everyone? I want to go with you.” Tholoana.
Yoh.
“But you are going with your mom and your brothers.” Mohale.
You see what I mean? The way Mohale said that “your mom and your brothers” shows the kind of hurt that only a child can display – the honest and uncut hurt.
“But you are my brother also.” Tholoana.
This is a bit tricky.
“I’m not going with papa.” Tholoana makes up his mind.
I just look at Khotso and leave the room. He needs to talk to his brother.

I spend the next hour getting the kids ready for the day. I bath the boys. Then Mohale thinks he is old enough to bath himself. We fight all the time, but I always win and he lets me bath him. I bath him, Tholoana and Rena. As they eat – Mohale ‘feeds’ Rena now. He is such a big brother. Yoh.
I make all the beds that are in this house, clean up a bit then I bath myself.
I’m a mom to three beautiful babies, but I’m not going to be that mom that doesn’t know how to look nice. I wear blue denim jeans, a black t-shirt and sneakers. When you have to run after my kids, you don’t do it in heels or sandals.

I’m finally packing bags for the day. Mohale and Tholoana are playing with Rena as I do this. Thabi walks in. She looks like she’s preparing to go out herself.
“Hey”, I greet her.
“Hey. Ushup?” Her.
“I’m good.” Me.
“Where are you guys going?” She asks. We didn’t invite her because she just generally wants nothing to do with the kids. Today is the kids’ day. I’m not sure if I should be feeling bad or…?
“The playground. For the kids. We just want them to go and play and not worry about being on the run. They’ve been through quite a bit in the last few months.” I say.
She nods her head and says, “That’s very thoughtful of you. They do need an outlet. But Tholoana also needs to spend time with his mother. It’s not cute that he seems to be confused about who his mother actually is.” She says. That actually hurts me. No doubt.
“Have I kept Tholoana away from his mother in any way?” I ask.
“Today. You bribe him with a trip with the gang? Obviously he’s going to choose what he knows over what he’s still dealing with.”
“And whose fault is that? Whose fault is it that he is familiar with the structure that I’ve provided for him over what you all want to bombard him with now because his mother is finally ready to step up and raise him?“
“There it is. It finally comes out. You don’t do all this shit because you love the kids. You do it because it makes you feel good about yourself. You are the one that raises the kids. You are the one that does everything for all the kids that –
“Rethabile! Uskang’ tlwayela masepa! Don’t you dare!”
Ona and Khotso walk in. I didn’t see that Mohale had gone to fetch them. He probably said “They are fighting again” because that’s how he always reports us.
Ona and Khotso stand between us.
“I was just saying that we had to postpone today because Tholoana is –
“Why are you lying? Why? Tell them what you just said to me. Tell them!”
She suddenly looks scared.
I take Rena and put her on one side of the stroller. Tholoana climbs on the other side himself. I grab one big bag that accommodates all four of us – my three kids and I – throw it over my shoulder then hold Mohale’s hand and we start moving out the house.
When I walk past Thabi, I pause and look at her. Then I say, “If you want to start shit with me, just say so. I’ll mop the floor with your fucken skinny ass. I’m from the Vaal. Sebokeng to be exact! Don’t take me lightly. I’ll fuck you up very quickly. And just so we are clear… you don’t have a child around here, so you don’t ever talk to me about these kids. Ona, I’ve been raising Thandeka’s child. If Thandeka wants to make plans with this child and expects me to manage the kids so her plans can be successful, she calls me like she has always done. Unless abuti, I’m no longer the mother of your children.”
“No. And I’m sorry for all of this. Thandeka and I know that we should’ve spoken to you first. Please forgive us.” Ona says.
I just push my pram out with my kids and just leave before these people drive me crazy.

We are at the playground and we are all having a good time. I decided to invite Thandeka and get her to bring her two boys as well. Her and I clearly need to talk. I’m in support of her being in Tholoana’s life, but she needs to talk to me. Thabi already has me feeling like Thandeka is ungrateful. I had to remind myself that this is Thabi and perhaps the best way to get to the bottom of whatever is going on is if I speak to Thandeka myself.

The guys are here with us, but they are within alcohol and food draped in cholesterol. Thandeka’s kids are cool. We get along quite okay. They are a bit older than the rest – especially Khanya. So Khanya is hanging out with Ona and the other men. Khosini is the one who’s playing and he seems to be having fun.

After chatting with the ladies and enjoying the afternoon, I call Thandeka to the side. She happily takes a walk with me.
“Thandeka, I thought you and I were good. I thought we could talk?” Me.
“Yeah. We are. And we can.”
I see Ona and Khotso walking up to us. Eish. I wish they could let us have this conversation.
“It’s just that… Thandeka, I’m happy you are here. I’m happy that Tholoana is getting to know you. I don’t want to take that away from you guys. But, I wish you could’ve spoken to me about your plans. I’ve been raising these kids as siblings where there is no differentiation of parents. Now, I have to explain why Tholoana has to go places with his mother and Mohale cannot go. I have to explain the changes that are happening in their lives right now because they come to me with those questions. These are kids. They don’t conceptualise a blended family in how we want it to work. In Tholoana’s mind, he can’t have both his brothers and his other brother in his life at the same time. I don’t even know why Mohale was not invited to your boat riding! It hurt him when Tholoana came home and was talking about it. It might mean nothing to you and Ona, but it’s going to have an impact on Tholoana’s relationship with Mohale.”
There is silence. Thandeka and Ona look at each other.
“Guys, I’d generally not get involved. I don’t like making a habit out of telling people how to raise their kids. But Tholoana was six months old when he started living with me. He still lives with me. He’s still my business. I don’t want him to get hurt because the adults in his life didn’t have foresight about the consequences of their decisions.” I say.
“Oluremi, let me start off by saying that I’m really sorry. Ona and I did feel that it would be better if it were just Tholoana and us for now so that everyone can adjust. We didn’t mean to disrespect you or disregard Tholoana’s and Mohale’s relationship. We really will deal with this a lot better in the future.” Thandeka says.
“Thandeka, maybe it would also be a good idea for you to try with Mohale. If your plan is to marry Ona, you’d have to raise him too. I’d like to see Mohale as free around you as your sons are free around Ona.” I say.
She seems unimpressed with that.
“Anyway, I’m sorry your plans got ruined today. I’ll speak to Tholoana so you guys can make up for today tomorrow.” I say then I walk away.
Khotso follows me.

“You are doing a great job with the kids, baby.” Khotso tells me as we walk back to the crowd.
“It’s not a job.” I say.
“I know. I didn’t mean it like that. Eish, what I’m trying to say is that we are all thankful and grateful for all that you do with us and with the kids.”
I nod my head.
“No one will ever replace you in their lives. That much I can promise you.” He says.
“I know.” I say.

Ugh, I’m just down. I want this day to be over already.
“Are you okay?” Teboho asks me.
“Be glad that Maboko doesn’t have any brothers and you don’t have to be a makoti with some creep.” I say.
She laughs.
“Thabi again?”
“T, what if I can’t let Tholoana go? What if i don’t want Thandeka to just come here and take him from me?”
I’m suddenly sobbing now.
Tebza looks around and we just start walking away together. I see Khotso observing us carefully. I really didn’t want to get emotional about this.
“I mean, he’s mine. With Mohale it’s better – Dise is dead and I’m his mom forever. But Thandeka is back. She’s getting a divorce, Ona wants to marry her and she’s already just taking over. I know I’m a bitch for feeling the way that I do, but I can’t help it.”
Teboho just hugs me. She rubs my back and she says, “You will always be Tholoana’s mother. Always. If you feel this way, imagine how Thandeka must feel knowing that she gave birth to him, but he sees her as a secondary mother?”
I just sob. I’m not consoled at all.
“Babe, you are the mother of all these kids running around here. Blood couldn’t make you any closer to any of them. That’s why they love you so much. There’s room for everyone in your heart – even crazy Thabi.”
We laugh.
“That bitch cannot wait to rub it in my face that Thandeka is back for Tholoana. If she could, she would go wake Dise up from the grave and have her come take Mohale from me too.” I say.
We laugh then Tebza says, “If she doesn’t clean up her act fast, we will go order a womb for her so she can birth her own instead of throwing her textbooks at us and telling us how to raise our kids in accordance with psychology 101.”
We just laugh.
“Oh chomi yaka… you are such a beautiful person. Don’t let people like Thabi take that away from you. Ever! Love the hell out of those kids. That’s all you know to do. The chips will fall where they should. Don’t worry.” She says.
“Thanks so much, T.” I say as we hug each other super tight.

“Hey”, I say to Ona as I walk into the kitchen. He’s been on a video call with Thandeka for the past hour. I’ve been listening. And I can actually see that I’ll be replaceable if I don’t do anything to make myself useful, they will get rid of me. I know Morena meant it when he said that I’m better off useful in this family.
“Hey. You look hot. You making me crave you.” He says.
He’s such a silly guy.
I just giggle and pull out an open bottle of wine from the fridge.
I’m wearing booty shorts and a tank top. I dressed up like this on purpose.
“I was hoping we could talk.” I say. He looks at me, sips his beer and waits for me to say something.
“I was thinking that maybe I’d help you brand yourself and set yourself up for being the next king, you know.” I say.
He looks at me.
“I mean, I’ve been doing some research and seeing what kind of initiatives I can get you involved in. Introduce you to world initiatives and have you take part in conversations that matter. You and Khotso are the next leaders of Tholoana Kingdom. You are the youngest leaders elect on our continent. You have so much to say and the world wants to listen to you speaking. You are a good looking man. You are a smart man. How about we utilise that and already set the stage for us to enter as the next royal couple?”
He smiles at me and says, “You think I’m hot?”
“That’s the only thing you’ve taken from what I’ve just said?”
We both laugh.
“Ona, i know that I already am at a disadvantage because I’ll never be able to give you kids and I know that I’m judged for not wanting any kids in my life. I want to have some use in your life. I’m no Oluremi who can just mother anything that bats its eyelashes at her. But I’m good at other stuff. And I want to be good at that stuff with you.”
He smiles at me. Then he comes to sit next to me.
I go down on my knees. He is shocked.
I undo his pants. He is traumatised now.
“Ona, I hope I’m not raping you”. I say.
He laughs aloud.
Now I blow on him and he fully enjoys it. Utterly.
When I’m done, he lifts me up from the floor and he puts me on the couch. Then right there, we actually have sex with each other for the first time.
I decide to show him something nice so, I’m twerking on his penis and I even have him wanting to turn me into his one and only. My goodness. I’m the wife who will never call off sex because I’m too tired from raising kids. I have to be the wife that raises the bar with other things. I need to be his friend. His favourite sex toy. The one he comes to for peace and good sex. I am laying the foundation now. Thandeka can be his makoti. I’ll happily be his wife.
We both love this so much that when we reach our climax, we just go there together and we are both moaning quite loudly.

We are lying on the floor of the TV room naked now. Thank God for this carpet. I’m not completely freezing.

“So, why haven’t you been giving me sex all this time?” He says.
I laugh at him.
“Look, Thabi… I’ve heard you. I hear what you are saying and I think it’s a great idea. I just need to run it past morena. He is the king still. I just need to make sure that our plans are aligned to his plans and that Tebza also gets on top of it. We pay her to make sure that everything is above board and that everything is aligned to what the government and the royal house is doing. But I’ve heard you and when I speak to them, I’ll make sure that you are in the forefront of leading this. Okay?” He says as he brushes my lips with his lips.
“Thank you. I’d really appreciate that. And Ona, thank you.. for saving my life….”
“We don’t have to talk about that anymore. Okay?”
I nod my head.
“Now, come give me round two.” He says.
I laugh aloud and we actually just spend the rest of the night having a lot of sex.

I wake up in the morning feeling really great. Everything is just nice. The energy around me is even nice and I’m just a happy woman.
I shower then dress up in a blue high waist skirt and a silk white shirt. I wear a wig for today. I’m lazy to do anything else with my hair.

I turn the living room into a mini office and I start mapping out plans to get Ona and Khotso out there. I know I’ll need Oluremi’s buy-in on this to make sure that I achieve what I want, but she’s friends with Teboho. I need to make nice with them.
Ona walks into his place and finds me busy in here. Teboho and Mofomahadi are with him.
“What happened in here?” Ona asks me.
“Just some ideas that I’m playing around with.”
“I see”, Tebza says.
She doesn’t seem impressed.
“Do you mind taking me through what you’ve got?” Teboho says.
I look at Ona. He nods his head. Khotso and Morena walk in.
“Well, there are three countries right now that have been hit by natural disasters and people are in need of a lot of aid to just get by. We might not necessarily be driving the “heal the world” initiative, but you can land in these countries, spend a day there and listen to the leaders and what they need. Us – the wives and maybe an elder kid or two – we actually go and pack a bag of essentials, check out the houses and be involved with the people.” I say.
“You do realise that we have our own problems in our backyard. If we cannot even take out money to solve the inequality in Tholoana Kingdom, we would be scrutinised for getting on a plane and solving issues outside of us.” Teboho says.
“Then let’s have an internal campaign and an external one. Morena can stay on home ground and deal with the local stuff. Ona and Khotso go out there and engage with the international stuff. Have those debates out there then bring back lessons at home so that we upgrade ourselves while taking part in the world.”
She looks at me.
“We can do this. We really can. It’s like how royals position themselves before they even step into the positions. This will be good for Ona. It’s an international campaign and we don’t even have opponents. It will work, Teboho. With your speciality in touching everything and turning it to gold, the world will know who Ona is and we won’t even have to ask for funding because we would have made the right friends with the right people and in the right places.” I say.
“Honestly, I like it.” Tebza says. I’m so shocked!
“Really?” Morena says.
“Yeah. It’s a lot of work. I don’t know how much Oluremi will borrow Khotso to us and I don’t know how much Mofomahadi will borrow us morena. But this can work and it can work extremely well.”
“So, Mohato will be home less?” Mofomahadi asks. Really?!
“Something like that.” I say.
“But you’ll be travelling with him. You’ll just also have your own portfolio that you’ll specifically be looking after.” Tebza says.
“What about Lulu and the kids?” Mofomahadi.
“You can be a mom anywhere. The family look will be part of the brand.” I say.
Everyone takes offence.
“Let me talk to Remi. We can regroup tomorrow. I’ll come work from here or we can work from my home office.” Teboho says.
I nod my head and smile. At least I know that I will not be losing my mind with boredom.

Today, Ona dropped me off at Tebza’s and Maboko’s beautiful home. Tebza said we can work from her office today. This house is so beautiful. It can make one wish that one’s permanent residency doesn’t have to be the royal house. I’d love my own space and I’d love one that is as beautiful and as big as this one.

“Excuse me, miss. Can I offer you something to drink before I lead you to Mrs Seete’s office? We will serve breakfast in the next hour when Mrs Seete comes back from dropping the kids off at school.” One of the helpers says to me.
“Just warm water with a slice of lemon and a teaspoon of honey, please.” I say.
“Right away. We will bring it to you at the office. May I show you to the office now?”
I nod my head.
She leads me up the stairs. On the staircase, there are pictures of Khabane and Ruri. One of Khabane on his own. One of Ruri on her own. Two of them together. They look like such happy children. Then at the top of the staircase is a portrait of Teboho and Maboko together. They look like a force. They look like they have a story of their own that is deserving of its own ink and paper. Theirs is a story of love and really fighting for each other, then producing two children who can only be blessed enough to be raised by this kind of power, love and wealth – not just in monetary value, but in all the things we all actually pray for when we pray for the love of our lives.

“I have a stunning wife, don’t I?” A voice creeps up on me.
I didn’t know that Maboko would be home. Now I feel awkward being here with just him and not having Tebza here.
“She is. And you are quite her equal. I was just admiring the beautiful love story before me.” I say.
“Yeah. We’ve been through a lot. But there’s no other woman I’d ever choose over her. Everything we’ve been through… I could only go through that with her. Only her.”
I hold onto my chest. He is so in love.
“I’m here to get a few files, but I could keep you company while you wait for Tebza.” He says.
“No, it’s okay. I have a lot to keep me busy before she gets here anyway. She runs quite a tight ship.”
He laughs and says, “you’ll get used to her. But she’s a cool chick. You just do what you need to do and you’ll be fine.”
I smile at him.
He is handsome, but my man takes the cake.

“Love, you are still here? Ona is blowing up my phone looking for you. What’s wrong with your phone?” Tebza says as she makes her way up the stairs.
Maboko pulls out his phone and looks at it, saying, “I didn’t realise it was on silent. Khabane was probably trying to secretly play his games again and didn’t put my phone off silent when he was done.”
I did say these little people are demons. I don’t know why anyone tries so hard to have them.
“Shit, I have to go.” Maboko says in panic.
“Baby? Keng?” Teboho asks him.
They look at me. I’m also curious. But they opt to pull each other into their main bedroom and gossip about whatever is going on. I end up finding my own way to the study.

Tebza has just done an entire presentation for me. But she’s such a stunning professional. I can just see why everyone wants to work with her. She’s a brand and PR genius. What I love the most about her is that she lets me shine in my areas of expertise – like research. Then she will help me conceptualise then we have something solid on what our narrative is and what we want to drive.
Now, we are both just doing individual work. She has even given me a desk in here.

“Ausi Teboho, we have your fruit snacks ready. Should we bring them up here?” A helper asks.
Tebza looks at me as if this is my call to make. Then she says, “Would you like to take a break and eat? Or do you want to eat through the work?”
“Let’s rather eat through the work. I don’t know what time Ona is coming to pick me up. He insisted we use one car today and I don’t understand why because we both have things to do”, I say.
Tebza instructs the lady to bring fruit up to us.

“You have a beautiful home”, I start the conversation.
“Thank you.” She says.
“You and Maboko – you guys really are a beautiful love story.”
She blushes.
“Where in LA did you live?” I ask her.
She looks at me then says, “Calabasas. You stayed in LA for a while?”
“I did, actually. One of the hospitals I once worked at is in LA”. I tell her.
She smiles at me and nods her head.
“How did you and Oluremi meet?”
“A guy I was vibing with was friends with a guy that she was vibing with. We hung out in the same WAGs world and we just became close. She’s a sweetheart and that’s why I’ll smack a bitch that doesn’t come correct when they come at her.”
I know that was meant for me, but I just nod my head and pretend to not catch any stray bullets here.
“Can I ask you something? Please don’t take this the wrong way…”
“Okay…???”
“Did you really just come back for a job or did you come back because Maboko was marrying Linda?” I ask her. I’ve been curious.
“Honey! I came back to get what was mine. Linda was never going to take my man. I let her have him for a few years, but he was never hers to have from the beginning nje!”
I actually laugh at this. She laughs too. She’s actually a funny human.
“Did Ona ever have a…
She looks at me, waiting for me to say it.
“The one that got away?” I say it.
She takes a deep breath.
Then she says, “Ona loved Regodise. He took his most risk when it came to her. He loved her effortlessly and fearlessly… without reservation. And she really broke his heart. I’ve never seen him love like that and I probably never will.”
I don’t know why that hurts me, but it does. And I take it.
“Can I now ask you a question?” She says.
“Sure.” I say.
“Why are you such a bitch?” She says.
“You not holding back much are you?”
“No. Remi and I have been trying to figure you out, but for the life of me, I don’t understand why you are so committed to being an absolute cow. Was Ona not giving you enough sex?”
I burst into laughter. Wow!
She laughs too.
Then I say, “Well, I’ve always been a competitive one-of-many born from the least loved wife and I happened to be my father’s gem. I was hated so much by siblings and their mothers that I started getting a kick out of it. I took it quite literally that if people hate you, you are doing something right. I was always going to be the successful one of my siblings. I’d never let them be more successful than me and I’d tell them. I guess that kind of environment brewed a bitch out of me and I don’t know how not to be a bitch anymore.”
We laugh at this.
“So, we are not your siblings. So, please, leave that shit in your family’s kraal. We deal with enough shit around here. We don’t have time to be hating each other too.”
I nod my head because I actually agree with her.
“And secondly, I know what they did to you when you were away for some time. For whatever it’s worth, I’m sorry.” She says.
I really didn’t want to go back there. I can’t even mouth a response. I just nod my head. I hope she knows that I’m genuinely saying thank you.

“How was your day?” Ona asks me as we walk into Reahile. He decided that we should eat out today and just talk. I should have given him sex a long time ago.
“It was busy. But I enjoy working with Teboho. She’s really focused and funny. I can see why you all love her so much.” I say.
He smiles at me.
“She also gave me perspective on a few things, like how I need to stop being a bitch around here because we deal with enough shit.” I say.
He nods his head then says, “I think I’m going to like your association with her.”
I just shrug my shoulders.
We settle at a nice corner table where we both sit on the same couch next to each other and not necessarily opposite each other.
“How was your day?” I ask him.
“Busy. But I just wanted us to hang out today. Just me and you.”
“Thank you. This is nice. I like it.”
He smiles at me.
“I should have given you sex a long time ago. You’ve really been hiding this side to you from me.” I say and he laughs aloud. I smile at him. It is actually nice to see him smile and laugh like this.

We place our orders for meals then after the waiter leaves, he slouches on the couch, facing me, and we talk.
“So, morena sent people to deliver the letter to your family today. The date that we proposed to start negotiating your lobola is next weekend.” He says. I was really not expecting this. He can also see it.
“There is an uncle that we managed to find – your father’s brother who is currently the regent while they wait to appoint the next king. Apparently he and your two eldest brothers will be leading the entire process from your family’s side.” He says.
“It’s not that I’m not happy. I’m overwhelmed by two emotions here. The first emotion is the resentment that I have for going home and having to deal with those people. Both my parents have passed and I have no one who is there that will actually make this experience nice for me. If it were up to me, these negotiations would be over a zoom call then you’d just send for the cows to be delivered to them.”
“You are a princess. Even if I wanted to, I could never disrespect you or your parents like that – even though they are late.” He says.
“I suppose. I’m just not looking forward to being there with those people.”
“Would you like me to ask Oluremi to go with you?”
“She doesn’t like me very much right now.” I say.
“Yeah, but you guys must fix whatever shit is going on. It is unacceptable. We are family.” He says.
“I know. I’ll make it right.”
“I’d appreciate it. Thank you.” He says.
We smile at each other.
Then he says, “What’s the second emotion that is overwhelming you?”
“Shock. I thought Thandeka was going to be your first wife. I’ve overheard a few conversations between you and Khotso.” I say.
“Is that what you want? For her to be my first wife?” he asks me.
I shake my head.
“My parents don’t even want me marrying her. So, if I do marry her, she cannot be the first and principal wife. She is divorced and she has two children from her first royal marriage. I guess she’s not first-wife material.” He says.
Wow, I guess there is something worse than not being able to have kids.
“How does she feel about it?” I ask.
“She’s chilled.” He says.
Of course she is.
“What if I don’t approve of your marriage to her?” I just throw it out there, testing my power.
“Why wouldn’t you approve?” He asks me.
“Because I don’t want you doing the things that you were doing to me to another woman”, I say.
He laughs aloud. I’m clearly a comedian today.
“But we already have Tholoana. Where do you think he comes from?” Ona just had to ruin this moment.
“I’m just saying. I don’t have to give it a visa.” I say.
Now he is in stitches. He even has tears coming out of his eyes. I just laugh.

Our food is now served.
We chat about as we eat, laughing and just enjoying each other’s company. Then dessert is served and we enjoy it well together. As he pays the bill, my phone rings. It is my eldest brother, Mothusi. Mothusi is probably the next chief. My uncle is regent while they decide. He was trained for this his entire life. There’s no way that he wouldn’t get it. He even makes the difficult decisions and does the things that no one is prepared to do – like phone me. I look at Ona. He looks at me. I answer it.
“Hello.” Me.
“Dumela, Rethabile.” He greets me too.
“Le kai, Mothusi?”
“I’m well, thank you. We have received a letter about the Mohale family coming next weekend to pay lobola for you.”
“Okay…”
“When will you be coming home so we can start communing with our ancestors and start our preparations? Remember that there has to be a traditional wedding to send you off in our home as well because you are a princess for the community here.” He says.
Ayi!
“What were you suggesting?” I ask.
“Tomorrow?”
Nope!
“I have a few things that I need to do. Tomorrow is not good for me. Can I phone you and let you know?”
He is quiet.
“Hello?”
“Do you mind if I drive down there to see you? We can drive back together. I’d like to have a moment with you and just talk to you before you come here to be with everyone else.” He says.
What on earth do we have to talk about?
“Okay. Is something wrong?” Me.
“A lot of things have been wrong for a very long time, Rethabile. But let’s talk about it when I arrive. I’ll arrive tomorrow morning.” He says.
My stomach is suddenly in knots.
“Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow then. Bye.” Me.
We hang up.
Ona looks at me. He can see that I’m nervous as hell.
“It’s going to be okay. Just give the situation a chance.” He says.
“Please come with me.” I say. I also want him close to me during this time and not having sex with Thandeka while I go through the most with my family.
“You want your family to slaughter me, now? And you guys will be doing a lot of traditional things. You wont even have time for me.” He says.
I sigh.
“Okay. I’ll drive down with you. I’ll bring Khotso and Maboko with me. Their wives will join us.” He says.
As long as he doesn’t say Thandeka, we are good.
“Thank you. Seriously, thank you.” I say.
He kisses me.
We prepare to leave and we see Thandeka walk in with her two sons.
“Hey”, Ona greets them with so much excitement.
“Hi”, the boys greet both Ona and I, hugging us as well. Thandeka and I are looking at each other. We both know what time it is.
“You guys are eating here tonight?” I ask with a smile on my face because I do have to be nice still. It’s how we play this game.
“Yep. I decided to spoil my boys before they leave me for boarding school.” She says.
I heard that Ona is paying for those fees. I’m waiting to be drunk to address that shit.
“Well, have a great evening.” I say.
“We will. Babe, are we seeing you later for our movie night?” Thandeka says. This bitch.
“Uncle Ona, you promised.” Khosini says.
“Yeah. I’ll join you guys after your dinner. I’m just going to drop Thabi off at home.” Ona says.
“Okay, we will see you later. And Thabi, don’t wait up. Have a good night.” Thandeka says with a smile then she and her boys walk into the restaurant.
I chuckle as I shake my head. Ona and I leave the restaurant holding hands. Now, I must pretend as if what just happened didn’t affect me.
