Episode 39

Zari and I are cuddled into sleep together. She spent the night last night. She comes every day. She sleeps over whenever she can. Sometimes, the prison warders say no. But most of us here have our wives coming every day and sleeping over when we are given the opportunity to do so.

I see the nurse coming into my cell. He’s here to give me my drip. I take my meds through a drip now and I have the drip every eight hours.

“Mr Mohale”, the nurse greets me.

“Sure. Ugrand?” Me.

“Yes sir. Are you well?” The nurse.

“I’m good. Let me wake up the Mrs. Please give us a few minutes”, I ask him.

“Sure boss.” He says then leaves the cell.

“Love”, I wake Zari up.

“What?”

I laugh at her. How is she comfortable sleeping here?

“You need to wake up. The nurse is here.” I say.

She opens one eye.

I kiss her.

“Please wake up”, I say.

We are both naked.

She gets up.

“I’ll go shower while you get treated. I’ll change that side.” She says.

“You not waiting for me? I want to wash your back.” I say.

She laughs at me.

“Okay, let’s get dressed then” She says.

Yes, I have my own shower and toilet in my cell.

I have the drip in my arm now.

Zari is sitting on the floor, giving us space for me to get my medication.

The medication is already kicking in and I’m feeling a bit tired. I’ll probably be out in no time.

Today is actually cold. Winter is kicking in and winter here is very cold. Two mink blankets arrived yesterday for each one of us in this section.

The nurse finishes with the drip. The chef brings in our food. Zari accepts it from the chef. The chef has to eat the first three spoons of each plate. If nothing happens to him, then we eat. He tastes the food and he’s fine.

Zari brings us the plates. She puts them on the small round dining table in here.

She comes to help me out of bed because I am feeling a bit weak. I hold onto her as I head to the table. She helps me sit on a chair.

“You alright?” She asks me.

“I’m good, baby. I appreciate you”, I say.

She smiles at me and pecks my lips.

We eat and chat away. I’m happy to hear that she’s well taken care of. My family is keeping their side of the deal and I’m happy with that. The prison guards are all getting paid properly as well. So that’s great.

“Everyone is going to Gundo’s birthday party this weekend”, she tells me.

“That’s nice. So, I won’t see you?”

Nah, I’m coming here. I’ve accepted what they’ve done, but it doesn’t mean I like it or like them. I don’t appreciate how they’ve treated us.” She says.

I look at her.

“My love, maybe we should just tap out of this shit“, she says.

“How do you mean?”

“Let’s just get jobs and live our own lives. We can’t keep doing this. How many times will they keep treating us like this?” She says.

I look at her.

“Baby, you can start that business that you’ve always wanted to start. And if you really want to be part of the church, you can have a legal business cleaning it’s money. Mo, I worry about you every time you are out on a mission or in a meeting. I don’t trust these people around you. You once went out to a meeting and you came back with a shot knee – shot by your father. You went out on a mission and look at where you are. I’m not happy, Mo. I’m asking you to leave this behind. Please.” She says.

I stare at her.

I take a deep breath.

“If I leave, they won’t make me king.” I tell her.

“They are never going to make you king, Mo. No matter what you do. It’s not happening”, she says.

This cuts me a bit.

“I know it hurts, but this is what we are dealing with. We, at this point, need to create our own legacy here. Please, my love. We need to do this for us.” She says.

I’m just in awe.

“You really love me, don’t you? Just me – the man himself. Not the Mohale name and perks. You just love me. Why?”

I just don’t understand. I’m not a loveable person.

She looks at me. She cries. But it’s not a hard cry. Tears just slip from her eyes.

“Mohato, I don’t care that your father is the king. I don’t care that you have money or that this cell is your idea of prison. I don’t care about you being king. I care about you being happy. And when you are not happy, that’s when I lose my mind. When you are not happy, that’s when I’m not happy. Mohato, I love you. You are my husband. I didn’t marry you because you are a Mohale. I married you because we make each other happy. Well, you make me very happy. I can only hope that I make you happy. Your smile is the best part of my day. We seek each other in the worst times and we never give up on each other. You are my best friend. You are my love. I don’t imagine myself ever having sex with anyone else”.

“Good! Because I’ll murder an idiot.” I say.

She laughs.

“And you do make me happy, Zar.” I reassure her.

She smiles at me.

“I choose you. Always.” She says.

I lean in towards her. She leans in too. We kiss.

“Hello”, a voice disturbs us.

We look at my cell gate. It’s my mom.

The guard opens my cell for her.

Zari stands up and offers her a chair. She then sits on another chair.

Le kai?” Mom.

“Just tired.” I say.

“He just finished his treatment for the morning”, Zari tells her.

“Oh okay. I’m happy you are eating though”, mom says.

“I’m trying.” Me.

“How are you, papa?” She asks me.

“You and Zari are definitely making this more bearable.” I say.

“I’m very happy to hear that. And Zari, thank you for your loyalty to Mohato.” Mom says.

Zari doesn’t say anything. She actually looks offended.

“So, I have good news”, mom says.

“Okay?” Me. Zari and I are both looking at her.

“We cut a deal with some people. Your eleven months have been cut to three months.”

Zari is happy.

“Who is we?” I ask. I know it’s just her. Why is she giving people credit they don’t deserve?

“Your dad and I.” She says.

“I know that man did nothing for me. You cut that deal by yourself, didn’t you?”

She’s quiet.

I nod my head in acceptance.

“Mme, Zari and I want out of the church. I want out of the church.”

She’s shocked.

Zari holds my hand.

“I want a business. I want my own house a bit far from Taung. You can clean money through my business, but I don’t want missions anymore.” I say.

“Mohato –

“Mme, please. We all know they’d rather do without me. So, let me go. I won’t cause any problems. I just want what’s rightfully mine… what I’ve worked for. The church must make sure that Zari and I have a house that’s fit for us. We keep our cars. They open a legal business for us to own and run. They can clean money through it, but I want my payment for it. We won’t be a problem.”

She looks at Zari.

“Are you responsible for this?” She asks Zari.

“Mme, I’m asking.” I say.

She stares at Zari like she wants to beat her up.

Then she looks at me and says, “Fine. But you take a stay-in nurse.”

I nod my head. I know that if I don’t have professional care 24/7, I’ll kill people I love. I really struggle to label my condition, but mme manages it well. She’s taught Zari how to help me manage it and Zari does really well.

“And I visit once every two weekends”, mme says.

“He’s thirty-four years old”, Zari protests.

“So?”

I actually chuckle.

They don’t get along, but they both love me so much. I don’t understand.

“This is my son, wena Zari.” Mme says.

“And he’s my husband.” Zari fights for herself.

“Once a month, mme.” I say.

She stares at Zari.

Ja neh

“Fine. And you have to allow me to give you ten million so you two can start yourselves up fine.” Mme says.

“No, thank you. We will manage”, Zari.

“On this point, I will not negotiate”, mme.

Zari looks at me.

Come on, we have to give her something.

“Thank you, mme.” I say.

She nods her head.

“I don’t want you to leave, Mohato.”

“I know, mme. But it’s for the best.”

“I’ll respect it. But I’m your mother. I know I don’t biologically birth you. But, I’ll never be able to cut off the umbilical cord between us. I’m asking that you and Zari be okay with that. Please.”

Zari actually stands up and hugs her.

Now this, I like.

“Do you want me to go and look for the house for you or you’ll do that together?” Mme asks me.

I look at Zari.

I pull a begging face. Can she please just involve her in something?

“We trust you, mme. Please find a home for us.” Zari says.

Mme smiles then nods her head.

“I’ll get to that then. And I’ll speak to Ona.”

“Thank you”, I say.

She nods her head and smiles.

“You are so grown up. I’m not ready”, she says with teary eyes.

Zari and I literally laugh.

“Don’t be strangers. I still need you”, she says.

I hold her hand.

Khanyi has been struggling to sleep since the incident happened. She is jumpy most of the time and she lies awake at night, crying. I phoned my parents and told them that this is the situation. My parents invited Khanyi and I to stay with them for some time. Maybe with a household support, she will get better. We’ve been staying with my parents for a month now. We’ve been to South Africa to visit Khanyi’s parents for two weekends of the month. But she’s not okay. And we can’t exactly take her to therapy because what will she get there and say? I know my mom and kazi had a talk… it wasn’t the best of talks, but it happened. I just heard my mom say, “You were with Khotso long enough to have expected that Khanyi would be exposed to this by dating Bane. So, you’ll need to let us be there for her.”

I’ve heard kazi tell Khanyi that she can break-up with me. It’s okay. Sometimes, I also feel like I’m to blame for the state that she’s in. But, I don’t want to lose her. I can’t lose her.

I wake up this morning and I find myself alone in bed. I stretch, put on a t-shirt and make my way downstairs. My mom and Khanyi are cooking together. Ru is helping, but doing something lighter. Khanyi is actually laughing today, smiling… she looks like she slept a lot better. I was too exhausted to notice if she was tossing and turning or what.

“Good morning”, I greet them.

My dad is in here sitting on a kitchen stool.

“Hey”, Khanyi greets me with her big smile.

She’s very happy today.

“Kazi phoned me. They’ve started planning my umemulo. I’m graduating soon and my birthday is in January. So, we will do the umemulo on my actual birthday, and it will be my 21st birthday party.”

I should’ve known the umemulo thing would bring life back to her.

“So, I’ll be going home soon to start getting my things sorted, like my beads, outfit and umkhonto”, she continues.

My parents are smiling and engaged in this, but I think it’s relief more than anything. We are relieved she’s alive again.

“Well, we will be there. So how much money do we give you on that day again?” My dad.

They’ve clearly been discussing this all morning.

“As much as you like. Please be generous.”

We all laugh.

I need to go buy a ring. I plan to propose to her on that day. I also need to talk to my parents about it.

“You know, I’m a bit worried.” She says.

“Why?” My mom asks.

“I have to wear a part of an animal around my boobs. It’s believed that if I’m not intombianymore, it will tear in front of everyone. And… eish…”

My parents both look at me.

“I’m sure it’s a myth”, I say.

“Khabane, I’m going to have tell papa. Kazi knows. I told her when we started, you know… I don’t want papa to find out that way.” She says.

“I’m sure he knows. I mean, we spend all this time together and –

“He doesn’t think about me like that!” She says.

This poor innocent girl.

My parents are laughing.

I’m just glad we are done dealing with that dark cloud we’ve been having.

Breakfast is nice. We are all at one table. Aunt Fifi, pope, Ntuthuko and Akwande have joined us today for breakfast.

Everyone is laughing. Ntuthuko and I are teasing each other, and we all laugh. I like him. I consider him as my cousin. I can see that pope appreciates it a lot. I know he’s my uncle before he’s pope, but I’ve seen this man in action. Him as pope stands out far much more than him being my Uncle Shak. Even Ntuthuko calls him pope. When you see him this dangerous, it’s difficult to see him as anything else. Akwande is the one who still calls him dad… because… well… he’s still sheltered.

“Why wasn’t I told that I can bring intombi yami to breakfast?” Ntuthuko says.

Khanyi is not just intombi yami. Please, can he respect my heart. Khanyi is my heart.

Intombi yakho changes every time I talk to you. I’m sure even now, intombi yakho is changing. Sizokhona?” Pope asks and we laugh.

Ey, everyone needs love. It’s not possible to be monogamous.” Ntuthuko says and all these women are ready to pounce. But us men pounce first, “EY EY EY!”

I then say, “speak for yourself, chief. We don’t all have the same issues.”

He laughs at us.

Idiot!

“You are going to be a father soon”, pope says to Ntuthuko.

“For real? Congratulations champ.” I say.

We all congratulate him. But he doesn’t seem happy about it.

“So, what’s your plan?” Pope.

“I’m not marrying her.” He says.

“Why? Was she one of those that were on rotation?” Ja no, that comment didn’t sit well with Khanyi. She’s saying this with a straight face.

“It’s complicated”, Ntuthuko tells Khanyi.

She rolls her eyes.

I don’t want Khanyi to have an issue with Ntuthuko. I like Ntuthuko and I find him hilarious.

“I’ll just pay inhlawulo and support my child”, Ntuthuko says.

“This is your fourth child that you have now that you just support and paid inhlawulo for. That’s not being a father, Ntuthuko”, pope.

“I don’t talk to any of their mothers”, he says.

“Why? Were they all complicated?” Khanyi. Ja no, she’s pissed.

“Khanyi, I’m sorry for my comment. I really don’t want to have issues with you”, I’m glad Ntuthuko picked up the vibe and he’s apologizing.

“It’s fine. But please don’t say things like that around me. And once you’ve introduced me to one girlfriend, I’m not meeting the rest of the rotation. So please, ungisize. I’m only going to acknowledge one girl as Ntuthuko’s girl”, Khanyi says.

We all look at Ntuthuko and we want to laugh. But pope likes this. If there’s one person who will straighten Ntuthuko out, it’s Khanyi.

“Also, there’s a birthday party at Tholoana World for my baby brother, Gundo. Please invite your kids. The mothers don’t have to come. But you need to start spending time with them. I think a birthday party should be okay”, Khanyi.

The looks on each parent’s face here – even Ntuthuko. I know I’m marrying gold. I know.

Ngiyabonga Khanyi. Kakhulu“, Ntuthuko says.

“You are my brother, angishoPhela ngesintu, we don’t know what a cousin is. Ubhuti nosisi or umzala. I know all about your relationship with Bane, so I know you are not umzala. We will figure this out together. Naye lo-Coming Soon, we will all wing it together.”

“Khanyi, we love you very much. And this is your home. I hope you know that”, my mom says.

She smiles at my mom.

I like that they get along. I always worried that my mom would have a hard time with my girlfriend.

“And in our home too. You are definitely part of our family. Khabane, you can’t afford to mess this one up”, Aunt Fifi says.

“I know”, I say and we all laugh.

When we are done, we have a meeting with the church. We all have to go and see Mohato. I just want to punch him. I’m annoyed with that asshole and I’m not over what he did. But I have to keep it pushing.

Khanyi and I are hugging.

“Promise me ukuthi uzobuya“, my woman is really not okay.

I kiss her. I still have her in my arms.

“I’ll be back. Maybe after Gundo’s party, you and I can treat ourselves to a weekend away”, I say.

She smiles at me and says, “I’d really love that. I was so scared, Bane. What was I going to do if anything had happened to you?”

“Nothing happened to me, baby. I came back. I’m fine. I’m here… with you.” I say and I peck her lips.

“Fifi is still not talking to me”, she says.

Yoh, they had a bad fight.

“She will come around. You’ll see.”

She nods her head.

“I have to go. Ngiyakuthanda yeva?” I try with this Zulu thing.

She smiles at me and says, “Nami ngiyakuthanda, sthandwa sami.”

She just had to go higher grade with it.

We kiss one more time and I leave.

My dad, pope, Ntuthuko and I are riding in one car. I’m driving. Ntuthuko is on the passenger seat. Our fathers are at the back.

“You and Khanyi must hook me up with a real one. I want what you guys have”, Ntuthuko says.

“Yoh, that girl gave me hell before she started smiling at me. I courted her for five years.” I say and I’m not lying.

“Yooooohhhhh!!” Ntukthuko says. Our fathers even laugh.

“Well, she’s worth it.” My dad says.

“That she is”, I say.

“Is she better? You guys said she was struggling to sleep”, pope asks.

“She’s better now. Fikile distracted her with the umemulo things and she’s excited about it.” My dad says.

“Khotso should’ve married that girl. Those Mohale boys never knew how to strategically pick wives. Ona came close with Regodise. Thabi might as well be part of the church. She knows how to play her part”, pope says.

I actually cannot think of kazi and Uncle Khotso. No!

“You know Khotso is fucking Yaya’s widow, right?” My dad says.

I’m so shocked I almost crash the car.

Ey ndoda! Yini manje?!” Ntuthuko.

Why are we all pretending like these men are not talking about heavy shit here?

“Yeah, I saw he bought a poes-huis for himself and this girl using the church’s trust. But he bought it cash. He just doesn’t want it traceable for Remo to find it”, pope says.

I’m so shocked!

I won’t even be able to look at Aunt Remo the same again.

“He says no one must find out about the affair, not even her kids. That’s why he bought the poes-huis.” My dad.

“But he goes and buys her an X7. That’s a two million rand plus car. This girl is a receptionist at a book shop or whatever the fuck that shop is. She has a duplex in an enclosed area. She has three kids in one of the most expensive private schools in the kingdom. And she drives a car like that. It’s only a matter of time before people look at her life and start asking questions. And if they follow the money, Yaya’s inheritance can only speak for so much.” Pope.

He actually has a point.

“I thought he loved Remo. The poor girl turned on her father for him… for us… for the church. Why is he doing this?” Pope asks.

“I don’t know. But it’s none of our business.” My dad.

“It will be when Remo finds out. And you know the church has made these women unstable. We don’t need the shit that’s going to come with this coming out. So, we must all help him hide this.” Pope.

We are just quiet.

Uncle Khotso?

Ndalo?

Ndalo I can see why she’d do this. She’s always loved being taken care of, regardless of who the man sleeps with at the end of the day. But Uncle Khotso?

Come on, man!

Mfundo and Nene seem to be getting along a bit better. I guess a kiss away from death will do that to you.

I’m preparing to go to work, and I have Bayaphiwa with me. She’s obsessed with me and I’m obsessed with her. The minute she smells me or hears my voice or I step into a room she’s in, she cries for me. My daughter, Mbali, used to be this way. Bayaphiwa reminds me of Mbali a lot. Mbali, my granddaughter, also has characteristics that make me miss my daughter. Both Mbali and Bayaphiwa look like Mbali. It’s so weird. It’s as if Mbali is coming back to me through the girls I have in my life.

“Mkhulu, you know you are going to leave us with a screaming baby, right? You must put her to sleep before you leave us”, Koena says as she comes into the kitchen.

We kiss.

She helps me pack my bags for the day.

“I clearly have a way with the ladies”, I say.

We laugh.

I’m glad she can laugh about it now. I could have said this exact same line a few years ago and she would have divorced me.

We’ve come a long way – this beauty queen and I have really come a long way!

I’d marry her over and over and over again.

I love her.

“Doesn’t she need to eat?” I ask.

“She’s not hungry when you are around. She only drinks from her bottle when you are here. When it’s just Nene and I, she just wants the boob.” Koena says and we laugh.

“Listen babe, thank you for all of this. Thank you for taking time off work and helping them with this. I really appreciate you.” I tell her. She must know. Not everyone would put their lives on hold to help with the baby.

“These are my babies, Mthunzi. I don’t mind. And Nene needs help. She needs to heal. At least she’s not on bedrest manje. Phela the first week, she only held the baby to feed her. She couldn’t get out of bed. Mfundo had it hard as well. They needed me. But at least now, she can even make it down the stairs. She bonds with Phiwa now and she’s really getting into it.” She says.

“You are our super woman. We love you.” I say as I kiss her.

I arrive at work. It’s a bit difficult to get in because the mall is active and there are cars headed there. I don’t know if I’m going to like this mall business, if I’m being stuck in traffic just to get my office, I’m going to be annoyed. Mfundo drove with me today. It’s his first day back.

“I’m only chilled about this traffic because all the shops in that mall pay rent. If they weren’t paying rent, I’d shut this shit down very quickly.” Mfundo says.

Before I can respond, Thomas phones me.

“Ramaru”, I answer my phone via the Bluetooth option.

“This fucken traffic!”

Mfundo and I laugh!

“No, this mall must go. The village was so much more peaceful without the damn mall”, he complains on.

“Babe, you need to calm down”, I hear Fikile saying.

“Today, all our staff might be late. We must anticipate it.” Thomas says.

Ja. But one of these gates must just be for staff. Customers must use a different gate into the village. Please.” I say.

We get into the office after thirty minutes in traffic at the gate.

We walk into the main building and staff have put together a baby shower for Mfundo. Do men get baby showers?

Mfundo is not even happy about this.

I actually laugh at him

“What the hell is this?!” Mfundo is so pissed.

“Boss, we thought we’d do a nappy shower for you.” Someone says.

“Really? I’m glad you are thinking about things that are not your work, and I’ve seen how behind everyone is with their spreadsheets. I’m at home with a new baby and you can’t keep shit going here without me? But you can blow up balloons and do spreadsheets for teddy bears for a baby shower? I’ve never heard of a man having a baby shower!”

They are all quiet. Then someone says, “it’s a nappy shower, sir.”

Then someone saves them by saying, “Mrs Msomi said it’s okay and that you’d like it.”

He’s getting soft.

“Thank you for whatever this is. But let’s get back to work. I see a lot of alcohol here. You drink on the job and I’ll fire you. I want spreadsheets in my inbox in the next hour. I’ll be having one-on-ones with everyone throughout the day. I hope your teams are on top of things.” Mfundo says then walks off.

Thomas, Fikile and I look at each other.

We walk off following Mfundo.

We get to Mfundo’s office. We close the door then all burst into laughter – even Mfundo.

“Mfundo, you were so harsh. Hai bo. They were doing something nice.” Fikile says.

“A baby shower, kazi? A whole baby shower?” Mfundo is actually disturbed by this.

“It’s a nappy shower, sir.” Thomas says.

We all burst into laughter.

“Anyway, what did I miss? I saw a few emails for the banking stuff as well as Thingo’s and Khanyi’s line. It’s really doing well.” Mfundo.

“You need to settle down first. You just got here.” Fikile.

“I have a curfew. And when I’m home, my wife doesn’t let me work. So, let’s do this.” Mfundo says.

Ja no, my son is cuffed.

Thomas, Fikile, Mfundo and I ended up working in Mfundo’s office for the day. We were catching him up and he was aligning us with developments that were stuck in his emails. Now, we are about to meet with my brother, chief of HR, and he will be doing a recruitment project for us for the banking division.

After the meeting with HR, Mfundo, Thomas, myself and Fikile meet with the board. It’s a meeting that goes into the evening – around 11pm. Fikile left around 4pm because she’s taking the whole “being a present mom” seriously. I just hope she doesn’t resign. We really need her.

It is just before midnight when Mfundo and I get into the house. Nene has Phiwa with her. Phiwa is wide awake. She hears my voice when I greet Nene and Koena, and she starts crying.

I’m so exhausted. But for her, I’ll drop it all. I take her from Nene as soon as I’ve put my bags down and taken off my suit jacket. She smiles when I hold her.

Ey wena, siyahamba soon sibuyela endlini. Lo mkhulu wakho lo, uyasala.” Mfundo says.

Phiwa smiles.

I wonder if she understands what her father is saying.

Koena and Nene serve us supper. They sit with us as we eat. Koena takes Phiwa from me so I can eat. Phiwa cries and Nene distracts her by kissing her and talking to her. Phiwa stops crying. I hear Nene say, “There’s that cute smile sikaPhiwa kamah wakhe! There’s that smile!”

We all smile at her.

“Tomorrow is her first day out the house”, Koena says.

Hawu? Niyaphi?” I ask.

“Nene’s appointment with her physio. Mfundo usually takes Nene then I stay with Phiwa. But Mfundo is back at work and Nene cannot drive yet”, Koena explains.

“I can take the day off”, Mfundo says.

“It’s okay, I’ll take her. I don’t mind. Baby girl will be good tomorrow”, Koena says.

Nene just smiles at Mfundo.

“You’ll let me know how it all goes?” Mfundo asks Nene.

“Yeah, I will.” Nene says.

“Please do. No surprises like the baby shower one you pulled at the office”, I mention because that’s still on my mind.

The four of us laugh here.

Nyalo where are the nappies. They said it’s a nappy shower.” The way Nene speaks is something I cannot get used to at all.

“I don’t know where they are.” Mfundo.

“Fikile brought them. They are upstairs in the nursery.” Koena says.

We all laugh.

“How’s my boy?” Mfundo asks about Liso.

“He’s good. He wanted to wait up for you. But he has school tomorrow. Thingo fetched him and Zo after school and they went to lunch together”, Nene.

I’m so happy they are happy yaz

“When is Mbali coming back?” Nene asks.

“They should be back tomorrow”, Mfundo says.

“We facetimed today. She wanted to see her sister.” Nene.

“I can’t wait for them to all be in one house.” Mfundo.

When are they leaving my house konje?

I conclude the night with my wife in bed.

Tonight, Phiwa sleeps with her parents for the first time. We put our hand up to help and sleep with her for her first month. So tonight, I conclude the night on top of my wife.

Goodnight.
